MODELING WORKFLOW AUTOMATION

Complex science.
Simple workflows.

Spend more time understanding your results. Let practical automation take care of the repetitive work around them.

For scientists, engineers, modelers, and the teams behind them.

MODELING DISCIPLINES

Water, environment,
and living systems.

These disciplines overlap. Coastal describes a setting; hydrology, hydraulics, and hydrodynamics describe related water processes. Environmental and ecological modeling address impacts and living systems.

Mesh generation and refinement support hydraulic and hydrodynamic modeling. Grid requirements depend on the model, its version, and the study.

The software examples explain each discipline. They do not establish Simplex integration or export support.

Coastal
Domain
Coasts, shorelines, estuaries, and nearshore zones
Focus
  • Waves
  • Tides
  • Storm surge
  • Sediment transport
  • Shoreline change
  • Coastal flooding

Hydrological
Domain
Watersheds and the movement and storage of water through the hydrologic cycle
Focus
  • Precipitation and runoff
  • Infiltration and soil moisture
  • Evapotranspiration
  • Streamflow and watershed response
  • Groundwater-surface water interactions
  • Hydrologic flow routing
Used by
Hydrologists, watershed modelers, and water resources professionals
Software example

Hydraulic
Domain
Flow in rivers, channels, floodplains, and hydraulic structures
Focus
  • Water-surface elevations
  • Flow depths and velocities
  • Flood inundation and routing
  • Bridges, culverts, weirs, and levees
  • 1D channel and 2D floodplain representation
  • Channel and floodplain geometry
Used by
Hydraulic engineers, river engineers, and floodplain modelers
Software example
HEC-RAS for river and floodplain hydraulics

HEC-RAS is listed here for its river and floodplain applications. Its unsteady-flow capabilities also include hydrodynamics.

Hydrodynamic
Domain
Time-varying flow, circulation, and water-level dynamics in rivers, lakes, estuaries, and coastal waters
Focus
  • Currents and water levels
  • Conservation of mass and momentum
  • Tidal and wind-driven circulation
  • Storm surge and wetting/drying
  • 2D depth-averaged and 3D flow
  • Mesh resolution, time steps, and numerical stability
Used by
Hydrodynamic modelers, coastal engineers, oceanographers, and lake and estuary researchers
Software examples
ADCIRC, SCHISM, Delft3D-FLOW / D-Flow FM, FVCOM, and MIKE 21 Hydrodynamic Module

Wave processes may require dedicated or coupled wave modules. Delft3D 4 uses structured grids; D-Flow FM uses flexible meshes.

Environmental
Domain

Focus
  • Water quality
  • Contaminant fate and transport
  • Exposure assessment
  • Environmental impacts
  • Ecosystem stressors
  • Evidence for regulatory review
Used by
Environmental engineers, environmental scientists, regulators, and consultants

Modeling can inform permitting and regulatory assessments. It does not by itself establish regulatory compliance.

Ecological
Domain

Focus
  • Habitat suitability
  • Species distribution
  • Wetland and vegetation dynamics
  • Fish populations and communities
  • Biodiversity
  • Ecosystem processes and services
Used by

A FEW PRACTICAL DETAILS

Start with a clear picture.

How do the tool connections work?

The Mesh button opens the hosted customer workspace in a new tab. Sign in with your approved account to create and review meshes. The Data, Modeling, Analysis and Reporting links open their service websites, where each service states its current availability.

Which Simplex services are available now?

Simplex-Data is in development. Its separate service website introduces the intended workflow. The hosted Mesh workspace is connected for approved accounts. Simplex-Modeling, Simplex-Analysis and Simplex-Reporting have separate planned-service websites. Simplex-Training remains a planned offering.

Where do I ask about help with a project?

Use the Mesh support page to ask a setup question or submit a project request. Scope, availability, and any fees are confirmed during onboarding.
